The full programme

Two days, hour by hour.

Day one builds the foundations of surgical extraction. Day two moves to wisdom teeth, minimally traumatic technique and complications. Both days run 9:00am to 5:00pm, with a substantial hands-on component.

Day One

Foundations of Surgical Extractions

01
8:30am
Introduction & Course Overview
Course learning objectives, the principles of safe surgical extraction, and the limits of surgical treatment within general practice.
9:00am
Surgical Anatomy for the General Dentist
The anatomical structures most relevant to extraction surgery, and how anatomy shapes planning, technique and risk.
9:45am
Medical Considerations
A systematic approach to medical risk: ASA classification, anticoagulants and antiplatelets, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, immunosuppression, renal and hepatic disease, pregnancy, smoking, allergies, antiresorptive and antiangiogenic medications, MRONJ risk, steroid use, antibiotic prophylaxis, and recognising patients better managed in a hospital or specialist setting.
10:45am
Morning break
11:00am
Imaging, Risk Assessment & Case Selection
When to use periapical imaging, OPG and CBCT. Assessing root morphology, surrounding bone, surgical access and high-risk anatomy, and predicting surgical difficulty. Most importantly, deciding: treat or refer?
11:45am
Surgical Principles & Instrumentation
Surgical setup and the proper use of elevators, luxators, forceps, surgical handpieces, burs, irrigation, retractors and root picks. Controlled force, creating a path of withdrawal, and avoiding unnecessary trauma.
12:30pm
Lunch
1:15pm
From Simple to Surgical Extraction
When and how to convert a conventional extraction to a surgical approach: incision and flap design, mucoperiosteal flap elevation, bone removal, purchase points, tooth sectioning, root separation, fractured-root retrieval, and choosing the right handpiece and bur.
2:15pm
Socket & Wound Management
Socket inspection, debridement, irrigation, haemostasis, flap repositioning, suturing and post-operative instructions.
2:45pm
Clinical Demonstration
A step-by-step surgical extraction demonstrating the principles covered through the day.
3:00pm
Hands-on: Surgical Extraction Fundamentals
The full sequence worked through on surgical models and animal tissue. Flap design, flap elevation, bone removal, tooth sectioning, root retrieval, socket management, suturing.
5:15pm
Case Discussion: Would You Take This Tooth Out?
An interactive series of clinical and radiographic cases pulling together medical status, anatomy, imaging, difficulty assessment, surgical planning and referral thresholds.
Day Two

Wisdom Teeth, Minimally Traumatic Extractions & Complications

02
8:30am
Wisdom Teeth: Assessment & Case Selection
A systematic framework for assessing third molars: indications for removal, eruption and impaction patterns, predicting surgical difficulty, inferior alveolar nerve assessment, coronectomy principles, CBCT indications, maxillary sinus considerations, and GP versus specialist management.
9:30am
Surgical Removal of Third Molars
Flap design, bone removal and tooth sectioning strategies for mandibular and maxillary third molars. Avoiding excessive surgical force, and inferior alveolar and lingual nerve considerations.
10:30am
Morning break
10:45am
Ridge Alterations & Minimally Traumatic Extractions
What happens to the alveolar ridge after extraction, and how technique influences future restorative and implant treatment. Preserving the buccal plate and soft tissue, periotomes and luxators, sectioning multi-rooted teeth, ankylosed and fractured roots, and extracting when an implant is planned.
12:15pm
Lunch
1:00pm
Clinical Demonstration
A wisdom tooth and a minimally traumatic extraction, highlighting surgical planning, controlled bone removal, tooth sectioning and preservation of surrounding structures.
1:45pm
Hands-on: Advanced Extraction Techniques
Surgical models and sheep heads. Bone removal, tooth sectioning, fractured root retrieval, third molar techniques, minimally traumatic extraction, handpiece use, flap management and suturing.
3:15pm
Break
4:00pm
Complications: Prevention & Management
Persistent bleeding, root fracture, tuberosity fracture, oroantral communication, root displacement into the sinus or soft tissues, inferior alveolar and lingual nerve injury, dry socket, post-operative infection, trismus, soft tissue injury, mandibular fracture, and aspiration or swallowing of surgical materials.
5:00pm
Key Takeaways & Course Close
Consolidation of the two-day surgical workflow, interactive discussion and final Q&A.
Learning outcomes

What you should be able to do by the end of day two.

01

Assess surgical difficulty

And recognise when referral is the appropriate call.

02

Identify risk factors

The anatomical, medical and radiographic factors that change the plan.

03

Plan and perform the extraction

Appropriate flap design, bone removal, tooth sectioning and closure.

04

Select the right instruments

And use surgical handpieces and burs properly.

05

Manage fractured and retained roots

Using a structured approach rather than improvising.

06

Assess third molars

And determine GP versus specialist management.

07

Extract minimally traumatically

Where preserving the socket for a future implant matters.

08

Manage the socket and wound

The principles of socket and wound management.

09

Handle complications

Recognise, prevent and manage the common ones.

Hands-on training

Surgical models and sheep heads.

A substantial part of both days is practical. Teeth are prepared and fractured in selected exercises so you can practise structured root retrieval in a controlled environment.

  • Surgical incision and flap design
  • Mucoperiosteal flap elevation
  • Soft tissue retraction
  • Bone removal
  • Tooth sectioning
  • Creation of purchase points
  • Root retrieval
  • Management of fractured roots
  • Surgical handpiece techniques
  • Third molar surgical principles
  • Minimally traumatic extraction
  • Socket inspection and management
  • Suturing and wound closure

Frequently asked

Everything you might be wondering.

Who is this course for?
General dentists with basic extraction experience who want to improve their surgical confidence, technique and case selection. You do not need prior surgical training.
How hands-on is it?
A substantial component of both days is practical. Day one runs a two-hour-plus hands-on block through the full extraction sequence, and day two runs another ninety minutes on advanced technique.

Exercises use surgical models and sheep heads. Teeth are prepared and fractured in selected exercises so you can practise structured root retrieval in a controlled environment.
What does day one cover?
Surgical anatomy, medical risk assessment, imaging and case selection, instrumentation, converting a simple extraction to a surgical one, and socket and wound management. It closes with an interactive case session, "Would you take this tooth out?"
What does day two cover?
Wisdom teeth assessment and case selection, surgical removal of third molars, ridge alterations and minimally traumatic extraction where an implant is planned, and a full session on preventing and managing complications.
Will it help me decide when to refer?
Yes. Referral thresholds run through the whole programme: predicting surgical difficulty, recognising high-risk anatomy and medical factors, inferior alveolar nerve assessment, and GP versus specialist management of third molars.
Who teaches it?
Specialist Oral Surgeon Dr Thao Truong, who is also a Senior Lecturer and Clinical Educator at the University of Sydney School of Dentistry.
How do I pay, and what's the refund policy?
Booking and payment go through Eventbrite. Refunds are available up to 7 days before the event.
